Newb question, how to make modo to automatically assign default material when proxy geometry doesn't have any?

I think Maxwell should assign one at render time. Or maybe not? What is happening after you start render?

the message is:
Object xxxxxxx has triangles without material. Use override or default material to allow rendering. Data preprocess failed. Render cannot countinue

Is it only a FIRE issue or you get the same message under normal Render mode.
I ask it because I can only reproduce it with FIRE.

Right now the only solution is to open the proxy scene in studio and set the default material there.
