Any advice for a SSS hair material? I am having trouble setting it up. It is for hair as grass.

not sure you really need sss for hair/grass. you could play around with various settings, but it has the potential to be computationally expensive..... a little sheen can work wonders!

There's also a possibility to use the layer transparency to 'fade off' the material. The render times will change a lot so be sensitive at first; the transparency compounds so try 95 - it should look fluffy/soft quickly.
