I originally put in a 30 GB Intel SSD to run Windows, with a large main storage hard drive. Now I'm ready to upgrade to a bigger SSD and I'm wondering how difficult it will be to transfer the data between the old and the new SSD (including the Windows installation). I don't have the original install disk for Windows because it was preloaded when I ordered it. Is this possible? Do I need some special software to do it?

the free version thats what i used.. had huge problems with a freshly setup win7 on my new workstation.
i installed on a patriot wildfire (sandforce controller) and had BSOD comming randomly... there is a lot to read about that issue on the net.. stay away from these ;)

so i picked up an intel 320, and managed to get a 1:1 duplicate .. running fine for 6 month now.

it is a while ago i did this.. but i think you just burn the cd, boot with it and need both ssd on the same controller

good luck,

On thing to keep in mind or investigate before hand is if the cloning tool allows you to clone to a larger drive. Some tools, when clone a 30GB to for instance a 100GB drive, will only make the target partition 30GB. Not sure if this tools works like that but something to be aware of.

right.. it will allow cloning to a larger drive, but it will do a sector by sector copy.
so the partition on the new drive will be restored in it's original capacity.

you could either install new software/page file on D:/ created in the leftover space or use any partition manager software you trust to blow up the system partition.

Concerning the partitions I found this:
Resize Partitions: EZ Gig IV gives you three options when creating your clone: automatically resizing partitions to the new drive, keeping the partition sizes the same or allowing you to manually resize your partitions
This looks pretty painless. Thanks for everyone's advice.
