Yes I thought it was great. Quite a good story very good cg a bit too realistic in places, which was creepy.
I think it was a good option to go with realistic rendering and cartoon proportions otherwise they would have been taking a trip down uncanny valley for sure.

ahh oki, good to know... I was going to see it, but the local cinema plays it only in 3D, so I need to find a 2D place... :D

I though it was ok but they definitely ventured in to the uncanny valley (I'm still convinced that the opera singer was live action with prosthetics!). The problem for me was that they had very realistic (although caricatured) characters doing very cartoony actions and this left a bit of a confusion. In the scene where the dam bursts, Tintin is doing obviously impossible things but the character does actually look realistic so you are left wondering what's going on. I know it's a cartoon but, like Herve, I would have preferred 2D cel-type animation, like the book. Just my 2 cents / pence / etc.

well yes that too, but I was talking about the movie in 2D rather than in 3D with glasses, I tried once but after 10 min. I had to go out.. superb headache... :|

so you're saying it looks too freaky somehow having too realist character animated like a cartoon...?

yes, the characters are pretty realistic. You know they're CG but they're close enough to be confused with reality from a distance or if your not paying 100% attention. Once you have this confusion in your head, seeing them do cartoon actions creates a conflict in your brain that is actually quite unsettling.

I'm not trying to put you off seeing it - I'd highly recommend checking it out but I think film-makers need to be wary of confusing the viewer about what 'real' characters can do.

It's like a having character spin it's head around, for example; if you can see it's special effects (prosthetics or CG) then you can cope with the discontinuity but if the on screen presence is 100% convincing then it can be quite unsettling to see it's head spin! I think the film-makers of the future need to stay within the realms of reality, otherwise they'll loose their audience though this disconnect.

I thought it was incredible, also given the fact that Weta pulled this off !
Imagine Rango was done by the CG Dep of ILM and Tintin isn't even the smallest amount less convincing either quality or complexity-wise.

The realism in design and detail isn't just enormous, it also shines way beyond the first approaches of Polar Express or Beowulf, which really looked unsettling to me. I thought of it as a totally new interpretation in style and technical breakthrough compared to the comics.

Watched it three times in 10 days, always baffled about the whole new feeling this experience gave me.

Unless Pixar, which doesn't seem to evolve much the last years, considering look, design and pioneering ( Incredibles, Wall-E, Up and Brave all have the same Characters, same shading, style etc..) I like these fresh, daring features much more.

Really looking forward to the next wave of movies/companies in the full cg field.

Highly recommended to everyone involved in cgi ;)
