hey dmeyer !

just wondering how your sr-2 went along..

i got really caught up in a lot of other business and only got the rig together now and ran the first benchmarks in non overclocked mode.

X5650 xeons w 24 gb kingston reg ecc (4gb modules) / bios A53

the thing is i am quite positively puzzled by the benchwell scores.. (maxwell 2.5.0 x64 running on win xp64)

the benchmark seems in tune but the rendertime @ 2:37 is crazy fast.. i also timed it with a stopwatch and it is correct.

do you see similar results?

edit.. looks like i missed something.. demo mode reduced the resolution hence the faster rendertimes.. strange i always thought demo mode would work to benchmark the scene.. instaled my lic, and i see 4 min at stock speed now.

Hello,

Yes the SR2 is built and running great at stock speeds. I have yet to get it going quicker. I'll try to get to some benchs later today. 8)

Ended up with the following:

SR2 board
2x X5680 Xeons
24 GB Corsair Dominator GT RAM (6x 4GB)
Quadro 5000
EVGA GTX 590 Hydro (Cuda board)
LSI 9265-8i RAID card
1x 240 GB OWC 6G SSD (System)
3x 120 GB OWC 6G SSD in RAID 0
2x WD Black 7200 RPM drives in RAID for Archive
custom water setup with too many parts to list. whisper quiet at ~25C.
Fit all of this into an 800D case.

Here you go:

x5680s 3.33 Ghz 12 core, using ye olde benchwell scene, with license at normal res

Stock speed: 3346 @ 3:11
at 3753 Mhz: 3753 @ 2:51
at 3953 Mhz: 3892 @ 2:34
at 4400 Mhz: 4398 @ 2:26 temps in mid 50s

very nice numbers... but the last 8 sec for a 450MHz increase doesn't look that good to me

Nice topic! lots of good info.

Im right now willing to get a w3680, i prefer xeon instead of i79xx because im not much into OC and it looks like the xeons are more stable and can handle ecc memory. My questions are:

1-Is there a big diference between the x5680 and the w3680? or its only that you can use 2 x5680's in the same board.

2-Has anyone done any test with the w3680 in order to check with the ones posted in this thread?

3- what about the i7-2700k? in cpu benchmarks appear to be as powerfull as all the others and half the price.

Thanks!!!

I can only comment on question number three. the 2600k or 2700k are phenomenal. I just purchased 6 of the 2600k chips to build a small renderfarm with. I have owned the 980x since day one, and the 2600k is equal in maxwell render speed to the 980x for 1/3 the price (you have to overclock it a bit to do that, but it's as simple as raising a single multiplier in the bios. if you don't overclock, i'd say it's 5/6 of the speed). You mentioned that you aren't in to overclocking, so if that's the case, don't get any "k" series chips. As far as I know, the only benefit for the K is to have the unlocked multiplier for super easy, basic overclocking. I originally was planning on doing the non K series 2600 for the renderfarm because it cuts off 30 bucks of the price. One thing to think about is that if you're getting a 2000 series chip is you'll only have 4 ram slots instead of 6. there may be other differences but off the top of my head I don't remember.

i d not buy anything right now... i one week the new 6-core sandy-i7 will be released!

Intel Core i7-3930K, 6x 3.20GHz, boxed (BX80619I73930K)
Intel Core i7-3960X, 6x 3.30GHz, boxed (BX80619I73960X)

the k version it will be around 500.-
both these chips should hit a cinebench of 10+ at stock speed.

considering what goes into one node (ram/mobo/case/hdd/license/etc..) i think paying 500 for the chip is a good balance, as it id very fast in deed.

yes, the first two and biggest sandy-E (6-core) should be released on Nov. 14. Both with free multi. The smaller ones will follow later.
And the sandy bridge xeon E5 Jan/Feb 2012

thanks for the link. bummer about the xeon coming out a couple months later though :\ have you read anything about company making dual socket mobos for these yet? That's what i'm really interested in doing once there are mobos available.

hehehe... evga of course.

but be patient.. it is a hard thing to make a dual socket & oc'able & Stable beast like this.
i am running the sr-2 atm, an it is a dream board after you sit down and have a serious talk with it...

Hard to believe that the 3960K is worth double the cost over the 3930K. Only difference seems to be 100Mhz stock speed and 12MB vs 15MB cache.
