Unbeknownst to most of Earth's citizens, government agencies had begun mining operations on the moon as early as the mid 1980's. Concerned about the repercussions of the inevitable public outcry if people would begin to see the early signs of defacement of the moon's surface, government scientists from around the world began collaborations on a system of Earth based projections of a "pristine, untouched" moon to cover up the massive amount of surface disruption planned for the visible side of the moon. This projection system succeeded for decades.

Until a small group of amateur astronomers began discussing certain anomalies they had discovered, and word got out to the public that something was amiss despite rigorous attempts by the government to cover up and eventually explain away the astronomers' discoveries. Finally, on November 8, 2021, a massive earthquake near the active projection station knocked out the system for approximately 23 minutes at 12:37 EST. Soon thereafter, the projection system was back up and running. Only one photo of the moon taken on the night of the earthquake has survived the cover up attempts. Here is that lone surviving photo of our moon in it's current state:

Massive plumes of dust and pollution can be seen along with what appears to be multitudes of large explosions, presumably from clean nuclear fusion blasting. Glowing communication satellites or ships in transit can also be seen off the surface.
