Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

OK, there are some smart folks here. Can anyone tell me what this thing is? I saw it on eBay and bought it for about $10 (US). Many people are saying it's some kind of opthamol-opthomal-optathmapol - thing to look at eyes. I think it's something to look into a furnace and take a measurement (or something). It has a connection for the light bulb inside. Anyone? (I took the pictures with my phone).

And here I was expecting some kind of a Faith No More thread...

No clue what it is, but the melting points of most commonly-used metals fall nicely within that 1600° C range, so I'd tend to agree with you. Might depend though, on whose eyes you're talking about:

To me it looks like a device to measure lung capacity, because of the rounded end piece.
But the scale tells something else.... hmmmmm

Looks like a Pyrometer, used to determine the temperature of an object's surface.

Very cool everyone, I knew you wouldn't let me down (except Rusteberg - what are you thinking? :D )! Now I'm on a mission to track down this exact model.

Thanks!

Good you've managed to find what it is, but I'm curious as to what it said it was on eBay when you bought it?

Also, JD, I thought the same about FNM. Kind of dissapointed when I saw it wasn't. ;)

It said "vintage meter" of some kind. I collect these things and build odd widgets from them (Steampunk kind of stuff). No one was bidding on it so I got it for $8 or $10 dollars or something. Now that I've been reading about these things it says there are optics and prisms and stuff in there:

I may have to take it apart and clean it up. Maybe recalibrate it to measure l.e.d.s... or find ghosts... or short skirts

Sorry about it not being FNM... if it'll make it better check here...http://www.fnm.com/index.shtml

Actually, it's one of the early Maxwell Render prototypes - you had to 'spell' the entire .MXS file source code into the front tube, the render process was displayed on that indicator board, and the finished .MXI file was spelled by the machine through the rear tube and you would write it down on a piece of a paper.
As you can see, back in those days Maxwell was limited to SL 16, and we called them 'degrees' instead of SL's.
You should be very proud to have one of those. :D

That was great. :)

His must be one of the early multilight models -- quite limited, as evidenced by the single LAMP option.
