The difference is directly visible.
Take a look at the background, it's cloudy due to the IC (irradiance caching)
Same problem between the base. For the SSS it's about some value tweaking, I am sure.

Btw, new renderings are in progress. I'm posting them tomorrow!
For me, it's always been fun making mistakes... I never hesitated to fall into. :) Because, I know you're a very talented user.

You know, "master" means the one with more mistakes.

i cant believe how much better and faster of a render MODO is on this image..(is that a bruteforce monte carlo engine?) the SSS does look a bit better in the Maxwell right image.. but overall the maxwell on looks cartoony and flat..(but the lights dont look like they match at all)

David: That's correct, you can spot that difference in the background. Not an easy one to see but it's there.

Tom: We all learn from our mistakes, i'm getting the feeling my mistake was to post this in the first place :D me ? talented ? oh plz that was ages ago. Nowadays i'm no longer talented, just older and less intelligent. :)

3DTP: Modo is faster but then again it's a whole different type of renderengine and comparing them speedwise is just wrong. However Modo's render can now output very good quality sss and more. I'm using both engines for different stuff so it doesn't matter. :)
About flatness in the Maxwell version, it can only be due to mistakes done in my setup. The original setup is something i built for Modo a while back and then now today quickly adapted it to Maxwell but my adaptation was rough and not really well done. In my new tweaked setup it lights and materials matches eachother much better than in the first one you saw.

Here's a small downsized crop which shows both the Maxwell and Modo renders side by side. :) keep in mind the Maxwell rendering is in progress

looks like you need to bump up the exposure by 50-100iso in the maxwell (left) cropped image to get lighting match a bit better--
but now the maxwell one dont look as flat just from that sneak peek

In Modo, do you notice the dark edge and glow around it? Maybe you're not setting it correctly?

I also thought that the left one is Maxwell - because of too dark area in sss ball near the inner ball, black shadow on inner ball and dark border on 3/4 ring. There shouldnt be so dark (black) parts in real sss material. All other new posts images of sss are very nice. And yes, background in the Modo image is "cloudy".
I would try it with more complex surface and more complex light situation - like in Tom`s render of focusing refracted rays to sss cube.

Yep a more complex scene like the Tom-Cube posted earlier here would be more optimal, but since i had this scene ready for one platform i decided to play with it on the other.. sorry!

Here are my new results with better matched materialsettings between both engines, better matching lighting.

Fullres versions of both images above.

Now you already know the answer to which is which so just enjoy the results.. :)

thanks for the test Magnus.
In the MR render, it's noise on the surface or a noise bump map?

Anytime, yes both the Maxwell and Modo renders have a bitmapped procedural noisemap on them to add a little surface irregularity and help in breaking up the speculars some. Maxwell has it in it's second layer of the material where the bump is set to height 0,5 and it has the same map inverted in the roughness slot. Modo has a similar mapping.
