I want to model and render this logo for one of our club nights;

Could anyone tell me... what is the best/cheapest way of creating the drips? It's not a paid job, just for myself/friends so is there any free software out there that can do it? Maybe there's something automated that can do a better/faster job than me using Solidworks. I'm also using Modo, although I don't know the software that well and haven't got the Splash Kit.

Thanks.

This should be fairly easy, you can with Modo subdiv the drips on the extruded textmodel just like you model anything else there.
If you wanna take the complex route then you could run a fluidsimulation with a gooey type fluid (slime), Realflow and/or Lagoa for Softimage should both be able to do this well.
Either way works fine but the first alternative is the quickest way to get it done. :)

Cheers Max, I think I might model it in Solidworks then... just a load of revolved profiles for the drips.

I thought there might be some software whereby you could just select the base of the logo and it theoretically turns it to a random liquid which drips.

Yeah but sometimes automated realflow-like software can create a nice random look quite quickly that might take a while to model in Solidworks. After all drips aren't regular looking revolves and it's the randomness that makes it look more realistic... if you know what I mean. I'll have a go though!

If it's gonna end up looking like your example, i would make them in 2D. You could easily draw nice curvy drops (paths) in Photoshop or Gimp, or a vector program. If it has to be 3D, i think Max is right. Modo's solid sketch tool might give you something to work with.
