The system requirements are pretty heavy though and Linux is the only Platform available for now.
Seems like I will need a NVidia Quadro card after all..

You won't need a Qaudro card for Mari, it works fine with a 400 series Nvidia gamingcard. And it's out there for Windows too. I'm betatesting Mari and it's a great app already in it's early days.

There are both screenshots and videos posted online already of both Linux and Windows versions of Mari. I'm testing the Windows version as i don't use Linux for 3D work.

Not if you have a mac. There are no 400 series for mac pros. Only the quadro 4800 which is over 1.500 euros.

Mari doesn't run on OS X anyway, because it needs OpenGL 3.0 or 4.0, and OS X only supports OpenGL 2.0 at the moment.
