Hi everyone. We've just recieved a project where we need to render a product which includes a clear plastic tube with gel inside. This would normally be fine but the gel is packed with hundreds of tiny bubbles/air pockets. I'm just wondering what people think might be the best way to go about this.

Would it be to model the gel with the bubbles inside and set to a gel like material, assign a texture to a solid model, add the bubbles in post? I've attached a couple of images to demonstrate the sort of effect I mean:

Any thoughts or ideas would be great. Thanks!

this is where i would start:

-set position object location to "volume"
-set speed to "0"

here's quick render using ags materials... hope this helps :)

Thanks, guys!

ababak: This idea sounds like a good bet. My worry is rendering almost 3 layers of transparent materials, one - maybe two - of which include SSS. May take a long time to clear. Though I could do it in stages and composite together... tests to follow!

rusteberg: Sounds good. I'm using SolidWorks which has veeeery different techniques and tools to Max, but I think I could translate what you've mentioned into the SolidWorks equivalent.

Thanks again. I'll post results as and when I can. :)

I know, I know... :( :p It started off well as we did a lot of engineering type stuff at first. But that's rapidly changing.

Maybe this will get you started very effect too might need to tweak the maps to get a variation in bubbles!
