the c1060 is from their previous gpu line up (gpu like gtx 285) but with 4gb ram.

it has been available for a while, but is basically sold out by now.

they will release a tesla 20xx series soon, with 3&6 gb ram, but they'll have a hefty price tag :?

yes, the new teslas will have insane price tags of $2500-$4000... so they should be more than twice as fast... maybe it's better to buy 2x c1060 and have 4gb ram (c2050 has only 3gb)

some specs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Tesla

it looks like the single precision performance only increased by 50% - but the double precision performance will be ~500% higher

You can still get the C1060s. I got mine here: http://www.sabrepc.com/p-97-nvidia-tesl ... 0-x16.aspx

They shipped the same day and are nice people.

thanks for the tip Frances!

i only looked around europe.. but the shop you mentioned even ships here.. might be well worth to hassle with customs.. looking at the prices the new tesla/fermi will have.. 2500.- for 3gb card ..ouch

what Zdeno said. (uh, on pg 1 of this thread). Sorry I found this thread so late, been busy playing with Octane demo!
NL almost solved all issues with quality of images, seems like only reason that we didn,t flush vray, mental, final etc. into a toilet is speed issue.
If maxwell will work as this octane on youtube film , who would bother anything else ?
Maxwell quality/features (lighting, multilight, materials, all the awesome plug-ins) + Octane-like speed (via GPU) would be an unbeatable combo. Especially if NL put the price down around 100 euros (like octane). I honestly believe other render engine developers would just give up.

And if they release also a version for iPad at $0.99, even better!

Well, no matter if you are a Maxwell aficionado or not, this 'realtime rendering' is what we will all be using in the very near future. I don't see that NL has a choice as a company. Maxwell cannot survive in the 'realtime' market as it is. These newer approaches to number crunching are simply more efficient and are getting better and better by leaps and bounds. And at reasonable price points...the days of four figure renderers are also coming to an end. With open source progressing as well. I played with an offshoot of Luxrender call smallLux and it is only in the very first stages of dev but impressive. Octane is also impressive for where it is presently...it's silly to campare it with anything at the moment...but look at the price...99 euro's, are you kidding? Give them some time and see where it goes. NL will have to join the game or become another 'late great' like Electric Image, hanging on with a few diehards as a core.

My .02...

I'll disagree here. I think it's still too early to gauge. The GPU renderers sure "seem" promising, but I think there are many obstacles. How fast will a full featured Octane be? When will it be full featured, having all of the tools necessary to make it a viable alternative in serious production studios? And in the meantime, what is Intel up to with it's future CPU's? Many questions are still unanswered.

That is all true Bubba. Still, there is a powerful attraction for the more immediate and I doubt that will fade. I think now it is a permanent facet to the whole of rendering in general, GPU or CPU or combined. And it's not all that new...FPrime for lightwave has been around for some years now. Its a logical part of technical progress that we will see more advances in that direction.

I played with a little renderer from a Japanese coder last night called Parthenon. The guy says he decided not to go any further because of the advances being made by Octane, Arion, iRay etc. But that thing is nearly instantaneous...truly mind blowing.
