I need trees with a cut crown shaped like a box. Anyone seen one of these or know if there is some software to create them?

Have you tried Ivy Generator? great free tool to make trees and stuff.
You can just make a box and let it float above the ground, and Ivy Generator grows a tree (with some slider adjustments of course)

If you model something like the one you want and use materials with displacement to make it more natural? Then use Maxwell proxy to repeat it more than once in your scene.
