If you ever find yourself with a premultiplied RGB in one image and an alpha in the other and you comp it by inverting the alpha, multiplying it by the background, and linear dodging (adding) the foreground, you may be interested to know Photoshop CS5 has a divide blend mode now...

If you are getting good results with matting > remove black matte then I guess this won't help much.
