Dell and HP both make comparable monitors in that price range that are kind of "entry level high end".

I own this monitor and I am very happy with it, but I never have used a "real" high end monitor before, so I can't say how it really compares, you'll just have to do the research for some tech review. I don't remember what the HP monitor model was, but i remember it was pretty much the main/only competitor in this price range. Hopefully that's at least a little bit of a starting point for ya.
