Hi!

Would any of you have come across any algorithm or actual software that would help in reconstructing a puzzle of shattered pieces. Much like if you break you Ming-vase, and took 2D pictures of all the pieces, and then the software could match them up by comparing the edges or similar.

It doesn't have to do it in 3D, just reporting which edge matches to another with numbers or similar is fine.

out of curiosity, what exactly are you trying to do?

My father is an archeologist, and he asked me If I knew about such a program,. so I figured I'd throw a few hooks out here,. So exactly that, putting together old shattered pieces of clay I suppose

You could contact Jerry Bruckheimer. They do that on CSI all the time.

CSI yeah, I read about them using that technique. But then, that's hollywood, even though it's probably based on something.

well there are some softwares that align 3d point clouds like geomagic. then there was this case where the state of new york had to reassemble millions of shredded documents to prosecute a company. they wrote their own software.

Ah, interesting, thanks! Then they probably used the "texture" then, that is aligning what's on the documents, the actual letters to each other. I would suspect at least if all the shredded pieces were cut to the same length stripes, it would be hard to use the edge to analyze any fitting.
