Don't know what happened, have been working on this same interior for some time, but somehow Rhino lost the Maxwell plugin camera settings for a named view, but when I reset it (I'm quite sure all is the same, especially the focal lenght), but the new settings (right) are not a 50mm camera (on the left). The render output is not matching my viewport focal length (which is correct). Any Ideas?

I found (and fixed) the problem. What was messing me up was that the film size w/h changed when I manually set the output size. I found that by enabling the "Lock film ratio (1:1)" that then I could independently set both the film size and output size.

As a side question, is the camera focus distance (set by plugin) saved in the Namedview?

Regarding cameras, I'm quite familiar with the use and behavior of the 35mm slr camera. I'm assuming from what I just experienced, that a 50mm focal length in a 35mm camera would not be the same as 50mm in a 2-1/4 format camera. Is that right? So if I want to get what I would expect from a 35mm camera, I would need to set the film size to 24mmx36mm. Right?

All of the positional parameters of a camera are inferred from its associated Rhino view, so yes, focal distance is stored with a Named View. When you set the focal distance using the plugin's command, it doesn't change any Maxwell camera parameters -- it literally sets the focal distance of the Rhino view, the same as if you did it by manually dragging around the view's control points (you can toggle the camera's visiblity in the viewport using F6).

On the question of film size, if you are trying to match 35mm, then yes, you should use 36mm x 24mm film. That is also the native theoretical film size used by the Rhino viewport; for landscape viewports, the film is always Nmm x 24mm, while for portrait viewports, it is always 24mm x Nmm -- basically, Rhino just assumes you turned the camera on its side for portrait viewports.
