I thought it was just a matter of allowing my scene to render longer but the fireflys are not going away at sl23...I'm using a single sided sss (milk dilute) with an emtter behind it -- is there a better
material to use for a diffuser?

Here's an image at sl 24...

ignore the floating gray object to the right but note the light fixture -- diffuser is a single surface and the material is sss dilute milk -- emitter on inside is curved (half tube) on the inside.

Well ... the reason I ask is because I've kind of discovered a cheat -- that I LOVE ! ... lol.

For these kind of things I just make up a home-made Rhino material -- yep. (forget all that fancy sss, mxi stuff .. lol)

Gloss finish = 45
Transparency = 20

Works perfect and it doesn't have the familiar colored dots associated with that come from making a standard dielectric. I'm sure you could make this kind of material with the material editor, ..I'm just not that savvy with it, .. so I cheat.

Maybe JD can elaborate on how these settings actually translate to mxcl.exe ... ?
Also ... when you use these kinds of materials, ... no material will actually show up in the material list.

Not sure how this would work with doing stuff out of Studio though ..

A few minutes rendering here ... Horrible test renders, but you get the idea.

Behind the glass is a flat plane emitter. No dots. :)

I've tried that with such mixed (poor) results in the past, I was hoping to have missed something with the way sss materials are working with single surfaces in V2. Sounds like I'm not missing
anything.

interesting! did you open the mxs in studio to see how the generated material looks like?

Yes, it works...I'm rendering it now. Material properties are assigned at the "basic" level in Rhino, no MW material is applied. It goes into studio as an "unnamed dielectric" -- fairly unremarkable looking, and it does render out diffuse...this is a priceless option!

You could, in studio, make the material:

Reflectance 0: 64;64;64
Reflectance 90: 255;255;255
Transmittance: 255;255;255

Attenuation: 20
ND: 1.51
Roughness: 55

That's it.

Cool ... I knew the material could be figured in Studio, .. just never checked to see what the recipe was... ;)

Try messing with the Gloss / Trans ... You can get the look you need -- I use it a lot on single-surface stuff with emitters.


Would it be okay if we call it ivox glass ? :lol:

I'm using it on a single surface, attenuation is set to cm. No forced fresnel.

So, here are the settings I have from the material imported into studio.

Reflectance 0: 64;64;64
Reflectance 90: 255;255;255
Transmittance: 255;255;255

Attenuation: 20 cm
ND: 1.51
Roughness: 55

That's it.

Ivox thanks for the detailed description on how you obtain this effect!! I do have one question...... how is your material different than just using a straight emitters? I guess I am wondering at how there are no dots with this mat versus say a standard emitter or mxi emitter. Any insight into this would be great... your test scene looks really cool. I have not created any Rhino materials before but now you have me thinking... :)
