That looks cool, I wouldn't mind playing with it.

I think these guys were trying to extend the original equations for Mandelbrot sets into 3D. From what I understand, Mandelbrot sets are functions of the complex plane, which has a real and an imaginary axis, making it 2D. They were trying to somehow add a third axis to the complex plane and still keep the spirit of the equations.
