One question for clock connoisseurs: What are the reddish-magenta stones you find in some clockworks? Low friction bearings? I always wondered about that.

Hi Adrian - those reddish brown stones are synthetic rubies/sapphires- they are indeed to reduce friction both because they have a very smooth surface and also because they hold a small amount of oil.
