I also tried to render an old viz.scene, but the exporter hangs
and says it cannot export the polymesh; how much i clean up
and delete possibly messy objects.

Do your polymeshes have UVs ? I had the same problems with meshes without UVs, not exporting or stuck trying to export. Just a shot in the dark but it may help !
