i don´t know what maxwell version (as a tester) brian is using, but there was an issue with a BRDF using SSS not being able to setup the roughness to high values without getting strange results when backlit.

ahh that is a lava feel to.. it. .you could definatly evolve this to lava.. esp using the "stairstepping" of displacment gets somtimes to atvantage to make the lava look more crustly/sharp..

can you explain the scene here ..is there sss involved -red emmiter from underneath? where/how does the red to blueblace metalic ransision occur.. is it texture mapped ?

Quick Modo test left to render overnight to S/L 20
I know the bricks are wrong on the back wall but it is just a test
Have just got to say the Modo plugin is really good "great work guys" gets my away from 3ds at last :D

May add some lights and sss to the plants and see what happens :)

This scene has only one camera, Physical Sky and one plane with a 2-layer material + Displacement.No SSS.
2 Min. Postwork in Photoshop with 2 Render-Channels.Only to make the red a little brighter.That´s it.
