And the random test I posted shows a very substantial speed increase. Is that not a fair answer? What else do you want?

Taking again one sentence from a paragraph is an incorrect assumption! My comments were in relation to Hyltom's tests which are proving in the case of his scenes that touted speed increases aren't achieved and instead the opposite true!

Seriously I could be talking out of my a..e, As I'm yet to do any effective tests due to other issues of v2 just not working, I'm rather keen when sorted to get these underway as exterior arch renders where no SSS materials in scene effected no slow down previously with 1.7.1 as it seems that SSS from that previous is where the main speed gains are. Hopefully though increases effect other scenes as well!

In this test i have optimize all the materials for V2 and V1.7 trying to make a fair comparison.
In v2, the dielectric clearly clear faster and actually the noise is really well distribute which is not the case in V1.7. The V1.7 image looks really more noisy in the bottom part but less noisy in the top part. So regarding the general noisy aspect of the pictures i can't really say which picture is better than other for the same amount of time. But what I'm sure is that the metal, the reflection at glazing angle, the richer color...make the product in V2 looks better. So now from all these test and for the lighting condition i use, i can't count on having faster rendering in V2...if i want a good picture i will have to wait as long as with V1.7. Now does the quality improvement is enough to buy the upgrade? For me YES, but I still find the new license policy to be incomprehensible and unfair, so i will not make the upgrade.

I think 1.7 is a good tool ... no one is forcing you to update it. I my self going to keep it , too...

my pictures never rendered any longer than SL 16 or 17. I can live with the rendertimes for these SL's ...

cheers :)

btw. I like your product shots, too ...

I think, Calico Jack was refering about HDR image through dielectric in the benchwell scene. And he is right about that. Every material in the benchwell scene in V2 is clearing faster except HDRI through glass - it is less grainy in V1.71 even in lower SL. Try it by yourself...

Hi, i usually don´t participate on the forum, but i was thinking about to upgrade or not.

First of all, i have to say i´m using maxwell since the very first beginning.
I want to say that i have seen a lot of good improvements on v. 2 (Stack layers, HDRI lighting, sss, ...).

But my case is the same as Hyltom. My first consideration for upgrade is the speed improvement. The first one for Next Limit is this one, too. Only remember it was the very first announcement of Next Limit and version 2.

Tom and Mverta, i can understand your point of view, and i asume too, as you are part of the development team, that you are very excited with the product (you have seen the code, the improve areas, the advance of the tests and,... .)

But one thing for me is totally clear. There isn´t a general HUGE improvement on speed and rendertimes. If it were so, there wouldn´t be so many post and doubts about the speed improvement. If it were HUGE (tremendous) there would be not doubt. For all type of scenes, for all type of lighting, for all type of materials, there would be a significant speed improve. And as i can see on several posts, it isn´t so.

As i said, my first intention was to upgrade cause of the speed improvement. And here is were i think Next Limit, in a way, has deceive all the costumers.

I only want to refresh what Next Limit told to us:

Image

They spoke about 2 to 5 times faster for all the cases, and in some specific ones even more.

And then we saw some examples, in allof them the speed increase was HUGE. This only improvement justified for me the upgrade. (And it was only the first news about Ver. 2.0 and the most important, too).

For these reason, i think there are people that are not happy. Cause Next Limit gave some expectations on speed increases that aren´t so in all cases.

And what is for me the biggest surprise is to see the first example of the yellow material that has post Hyltom.
It is slower with ver 2 than with ver 1.7.

So for the time being i won´t upgrade to ver 2 too.
Sorry.

PD: And as mverta told, my only intention with this post is to push a bit more the Next Limit Team to improve speed in future versions.

Witt3D - You have to realize difference beetween advertisement and real life ;)

this X2 speed improvements or X5 speed improvements means :

"If you want to render with your 8 PC's like used to with 1.7 ver.
It will cost You X2 more money if you upgrade or even X6 more money if you are new customer"

I am staing with 1.7 too , through all years I never upgraded any software as service packs shows up, It is not smart to be a beta tester and pay for that.
I am waiting for some bundles and special christmas offer - NL have to eat too, and sooner or later render node will cost reasonable price.

You will see , days when 1 full licens with +3 free render nodes will come.

Dear Hyltom! it is sad Your awesome material pack for free (thanks again for that!) have to be remastered

That's your choice. But if you do decide to stay behind, perhaps you should at least upgrade to 1.7.1. There were some important fixes in that patch. 1.7.1 is still the 2nd best renderer available.
 ...

Well, I wish I could drive an Aston Martin Vantage every day but I can't afford it so I keep using my VW. But even if i could buy one, i will never think about own one, it's such a waste of money and i don't buy stuff just for showing off...same case with maxwell 2.0. After all, 1.7.1 is still the best render engine available base on its quality/price rapport and even if i could buy one license of V2, i prefer to use my old version. At least i don't feel to have been deceive with that one.

The new GT4 is sooo ... ahhhh.. in a next life maybe... hehe
Does this one come with a giant list of improvement too? Little does it matter, i prefer the previous version... :D

At first sight, not much difference...but when you compare the price, you understand that there should be something better somewhere.
