Running Maxwell in 32-bit mode wouldn't have helped anyway, it's the crashing application that's supposed to be run in 32-bit, which in this case is Maya, and that's 32-bit only anyway. Until we release the fix, you can disable reading back the image in the plug-in preferences (window -> rendering editors -> maxwell).

I tried to debug this problem, but I can't get Maya to crash with 32-bit TIFF files. Can you give me more details about the set-up, like resolution, which channels you were rendering etc.? Or better yet, could you share one of the rendered images which causes Maya to crash when reading it back?

the crash happens when you have a missing texture link and the render fails in Maxwell.app. When you return to Maya, it will crash. If you can't get that to happen, I'll post a scene where it happens to me.
