Where's a good place to pick up a nice HDRI pack or two? not looking for free hdri's. looking for some really rich environments with lots of sunsets/dusk possibly. anywhere else besides Dosch?

thanks in advance.

I ditto Mihai...high quality.

Don't have anything positive to say about Dosch...IMOP their models, images and scenes suck...

My experience is - the DOSCH HDRI collections are quite good (very good image quality - I bought some collections), but not the the (old) sachform HDRI (old means HDRIbase, ... low res and distorsions). The newer sachform HDRI of the PANObase collections are looking better, but not perfect (for example vertical lines are not vertical, the camera seems to be turned) - I have no trust in the quality.

Also I bought some HDRI from http://www.maxzoom.de/ - high res and high quality.

And don't forget - only a few companies sell HDRI with backplate images. Not the highest resoultions, but with backplates:

there are some great ones for FREE on openfootage.net -

10,000 x 4,000 for backplates  AND 2,000 x 500 for lighting :D

They're very good quality and may just fit the bill. I've used these on a couple of projects recently and they're great. Nothing wrong with paid-for ones but try these free versions first.

They're DonateWare so if you're using them for commercial projects it would be nice if we helped the guy out...

P.S. also some good panaoramas, textures and beautiful timelapse!

You have to see also the nr of fstops captured in the HDR to tell if it's good quality or not so good. Lower the fstop in HDRshop, or exposure in Photoshop CS3 and check how the strong lightsources get dimmer. If you just see a white splash that gets darker it means too few separate captures where used. The light sources should get smaller and keep the brightness, just as if you had taken a photo of it at lower exposure.

I bought the VHDRI pack, but never been able to use them, at least not the High resolution versions.
It's sad both for the price i spent and for the quality in itself that is amazing....i am upgrading to v2 and reeeeally hoping to regain them

Mihai wrote:Mattia, you might want to scale them down if they are so big. There is no need to have a 10 000 pixel HDR image in the render, it will take up a huge amount of RAM.
Look at my portfolio at www.simulacrum.de -> divers -> third image (red Mini) - it's rendered with a DOSCH 10.000x5.000 HDRI. Only a part of the big background HDRI is direct visible at the background and if I render an image like this at 3.000x2.000, than the high res HDRI isn't to big. OK, I could use an extra backplate image, but per Highres HDRI anything perfect match, the workflow can be quite eqasy. I used Vray for Rhino for it - but better Hypershot show, how easy a full environment workflow can be.

One general advice is... NEVER buy Dosch hdri... very low dynamic.. just not good at all.. I have just trashed 99 euros yesterday..

ops, sorry for not having answered to those that kindly gave me their advice
Anyway they are working now, even at full resolution , but anyway i should have followed the hint of scaling them down before!
