Those of you longer in the tooth may remember Arnold Renderer? I can remember being impressed with the Pepeland renders back in the 00's http://www.3dluvr.com/marcosss/
It seems like it has been resurrected (maybe it never went away?) by Sony Picture Imageworks (Arnold was use exclusively on Monster House and the new Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs movies) and Solid Angle (who look like they'll be selling it when it finally comes out)
Although it's biased, it's good and amazingly fast; there's a tantalizing glimpse here http://www.cgauiwtalk.com/showthread.php?p=75690
and more info can be found here http://groups.google.com/group/xsi_list ... 9662f4f0fa
and here http://groups.google.com/group/xsi_list ... ff06c27fb8
they're lengthy threads but keep reading there are some more examples as you go on...
Keep watching the skis...
