I haven't tried that Joris, might just have to give it a shot to see how well it works. Thanks for the tip sir.

Here's something else.. all the first 36 elements of the Periodic Table all recreated with Maxwell based upon data found online on various websites to get a approximate representation of the surface characteristics of each single element. I will upload the fullres version as soon as i get internet at home again. Take a look at this meanwhile..

Hehe, that's some great stuff, Max :D . But I'm afraid there are some nasty elements in there that would be impossible to recreate.

:) it's not your average list of materials.. yep you're right, there are a bunch of elements there which are pretty much impossible to recreate. All the gases for example, but i'll do my best anyways.. :)

Here's a link to the fullres version, it's huge.. over 10k wide and 8mb in size so it takes time to load.

Thanks for looking and commenting m-Que. :)

Messing around a bit, nothing special yet.. but attempting to recreate a ok looking icematerial without using sss. No textures, bumpmaps or anything used in this one so far.

New version, this time with some textures applied..

One more example, now with sss added and many more textures.

A quick breakdown of my "shadertree" in Maxwell for this ice shader. It's 5 layers totally, i know.. too much but it was fun, i can't help it. :(

Since i was not that satisfied with the ice i wanted to try to rebuild an old classic, aluminium. This one is a bit too scratchy but i'm gonna tone it down more, however i'm quite satisfied with the colortone, roughness and the whole look & feel of the material. :)

Tweaked the ice some more, added visible bluewhite'ish cracks in it..

Thanks Teabag, yep those two are not too bad gold materials, but i think most of them would work (not all) because there are both very reflective gold, semi reflective and dull looking gold materials out there. So these tests cover just about the entire range :)
I doublechecked and reuploaded wip 2 again so it should work, but it's just the same as wip 1 only at double the resolution if i remember correctly.

One more test.. a shiny gold with tiny scratches that can be easily disabled. They can be as easily disabled in all these materials above depending on the look you want for the object you're gonna render.

Golden Terminators :D they look sooo cheesy!

Been playing around trying to find new types of setups based upon ThomasAn's original scene. I'm replacing the sphere in the centre with laserscanned objects i found for free online. Here's a few examples.. :)

How about a new scene to test Maxwell materials on.. :D

I added bones to the hand as can be seen below, it was a bit of pain to do but it will definately help when testing skinshaders and other sss materials. :)

Hey Max, for me this is the best alu material I have ever seen. Much better than what I am using atm.
Care to share it?

Jesper: Thank you very much! i'm glad you like it. I'm gonna fix the textures issues in that material and then i can upload it to the MXM Gallery. :)

Another thing.. i been playing around with creating a whole new and very different type of MXM testing scene. This one is based on models found for free online and then i fixed them, 'rigged' them into the base handmesh and positioned them into Thomas default MXM scene. Personally i like it the way it turned out but it might not work for anyone else. Anyhow, with this setup you can use the hand to test your sss materials on, the skeletal bone to test sss and other materials on, and last but not least the T-800 endoskeleton can be used to test metals and other materials on. And you can ofcourse combine these as you wish to give your hand some nice human bones or a even nicer endoskeleton. :)

If anyone is interested i been thinking about sharing this MXM scene so everyone can have fun with it.

Some exampleimages below..

As most of you have already seen and read here i been preparing this scene for a few days now. I built it as it's something i wanted for a long time for my own personal experiements. :) all models included are free and they come from various sites and forums on the net. Credits and copyrights belongs to the original creators of each model, i'm only responsible for the setup and materials in this scene.

The advantage of this setup compared to many others is that you have multiple scenes in one, this scene allows you to test your sss materials very well since you got the internal geometry inside the handmesh. It also allows you to test metals if you disable the hand and the humanskeleton models, or you could test sss and plastics or any other materials on the humanskeleton models only. It offers alot of possibilities for advanced testing, however i highly recommend you do not use this scene to test any displacement on as all the geometry in it is pretty highpoly.

The skinshader is not by any means perfect, it has too strong sss and that's why so much of the skeleton can be seen through the hand. The sss needs to be toned down alot more but i haven't really had time to fix it yet. Will do it eventually..
Another thing, default resolution is set to 2000x2000, change that to whatever other resolution you want but i recommend 1000x1000 for normal testrenders.

Have fun with it! it was alot of hard work to setup this scene.

I was not planning on posting anything more in this thread but this one i just have to post, hope you guys will not mind.. :)

Today i been testing the 'Maxwell Skin' some more, tweaking it and testing it on a real world type scene freely available online. For these tests i used the
old classic scene of The Patient scene originally found here http://www.ten24.info/oldman/tutorial.htm

Anyhow, here in my exampleimages below i used a tweaked version of my skinshader for the hand i posted images of above. I also used the textures included in the Patient scenefile to drop those into my Maxwell material and see if it worked as expected and i actually think this works very well. Atleast in my eyes it both looks and feels pretty realistic. But maybe you guys are of a different opinion.. :)

Default skinshader applied, this version is without the specially made textures for the character included in the Patient archive.
Image

These examples use the modified and adapted version of the skinshader with textures from the Patient archive.
