Any features you'd like to see implemented into Maxwell?

This is a list I made after I read that MW 2.0 should become a reality "soon":

100 Improve dielectrics
* I do not want to use AGS anymore (I want Sun light to go through "real" glass as other lights do)
* I do not want to use "Thomas's Russian dolls workaround" anymore…
* I want to have realistic water pools without duplicating water surface and without ghost materials…

90 Make Physical sky physical
* There should be some light after sunset (Nautical, Civil, Astronomical Twilight) - there is still some light emitted/reflected by sky even at midnight (I do not mention stars, Moon, planets…)
* Add Sky as two separated lights in Multilight tab - one for Sun and second for Environment (even I know that Sun intensity affects Environment intensity, color etc. Wish I could change them independently to sharpen/soften/disable direct sun shadows)

80 Make possible to switch between relative and absolute path for texture files ("wood_c.jpg" instead of "C://Documents and Settings/Username/Documents/Projects/Houses/House 176/Materials/Wood1/wood_c.jpg")
* I usually put mxm file to same directory as relevant textures and I wish materials stay valid even I move material or scene to different directory or computer
* Relative texture path in mxm file should be relative to mxm
* Relative texture path in mxs file should be relative to mxs

70 Add support for psd format (or more user friendly handling of alpha channel)
* Wish I could skip workaround with rendering RGB and Alpha channels separately, then merging using Photoshop (removing black matte) to get what I wanted

60 Fix "intersecting" instances bug

50 Check SSS
* Does IOR matter in SSS materials?
* Real 3D materials - marble, human skin, Lathe, Nutella
* Minimize known limitations - light source behind SSS, intersecting objects…

40 Split Maxwell Render engine and Maxwell Studio into two separate products
* I do not need Studio at all. All development in Studio is wasting NL's time and resources from my point of view - I do pay for nothing then…

30 Add fog/haze/desaturation based on depth of scene (I know it can be done using third party SW using Z-buffer channel - but why to use third party when M~R should do better?)

20 Improve motion blur
* especially for fast rotating object (car wheels, airscrews... Including PLA - arms, legs…)
* take into account more frames

10 When uninstalling - keep material library! Or even better - when installing let user to select where to install material library

At last but not at least - set a resonable price tag for upgrade to 2.0 - or even better - include most of my wishes in 1.8 version

Hi Martin,
That´s a quite list :D and I have to agree in every point.
For example about Studio and Render engine is true, I guess many people don´t touch Studio at all, so it would be nice if they can split it.
Lately I´ve been thinking about that "bug" of intersecting instances and it would be nice to have this fix previous Maxwell 2.
And those workaround like causitcs water pool or alpha channel are a real pain, let´s hope that those issues are addressed in version 2.

Cheers

Nice wishlist....

No90, second sentense... I don't know if this is possible... or physical...

No40, I don't use studio either, but I think that instead of not having studio at all, it would be better and even more correct to have a maxwell studio we can use...

No 50, I don't use SSS so I don't care (arch. renderings...) but I guess this has to be fixed for product renderings...
Also SSS for thin objects that would create great leaves...

My addition... Either a compact MXM file with all textures included or a better and final way of managing textures and mats... For example we have pack and go for the textures and "export from mxs" for the mxm files... not correct imho...

And the first ten people that add to this whishlist, should get a license of V2.0 free !!! :D

Now we specify only texture of surface. We do not specify changes of material in depth of objects. At least we should have control over "Attenuation" thickness - now it is a number. Maybe it should be better to control it with a texture... Same as it is at coating. I do not know how to explain it better. Few pics:

All good wishes, i agree with most of them. I'd also love to see volumetric shaders for Maxwell but i think that it has to get ALOT faster and clear noise much better for that to ever be realistic. They're pretty cpu demanding shaders even on a standard renderengine, FinalRender for 3dsmax has a addon which let's you work with such volumetric shaders and although the results are beautiful it's painfully slow there already. It's a nice dream though. :)

beautiful materials. rich in color and craftsmanship.

i guess this wish of REAL materials goes in the direction of 2d and 3d (columetric) procedurals, but that may become reality soon ..

I too hope for most of this list, though I need studio!

AND

I really would like to see some of the items fixed in 1.8 before I'm expected to part with cash for 2.0 when I'm still dealing every day with things that don't quite work!

I'll Add:

1. Thinkness generating SSS materials to single plane geometry (fast sss rendering)!
2. Real time HDRI effect in preview!
3. Open GL shadow rendering in shaded mode in studio (nothing makes me crankier than testing and testing and testing just to see if the shadows are correctly located)!
4. Multilight control over HDRI channels (background, illumination, reflection, refraction) and skydome / physical sky,
5. Option and multilight control over blending skydome and physical sky,
6. RGB values for all lights under Multilight control,
7. Auto ground plane in studio (that darn light that comes from below! Grrrr!),
8. Displacement that doesn't count on significant surface subdivision!!!!
9. Bump that works correctly in sunlight!
10. Free coffee!

That would be a darn cool feature!!!!!

It would be nice to be able to use a flat plane for a liquid and have a viscosity setting which would allow for proper surface tension of the liquid around the edge of the glass or container.

And I know that this is a BIG wish but it would be nice to be able to have correct phenomena related to SSS. I am a Gemmologist and would love to be able to render phenomenal gemstones correctly- i.e. moonstone- which has a natural sub surface scattering effect which refracts a whitish or bluish colour back to the viewer.

That'd be more than great!

So, is this a known issue?

Thanks a lot for your response, I will update and […]

did you tried luxCore?
