People of the Maxwell universe :D

I'm thinking about purchasing a new pocketcamera or a cheap DSLR (can't afford a D90) :( so i'm wondering what suggestions you guys have. I can spend between 500 to 650 euro on it. Feel free to come with tips..

The one's i looked at so far are...
- Canon Powershot G10
- Canon EOS 1000D
- Nikon D60
- Olympus E-520
- Pentax K200D

Thanks Tony for the link, it looks like most of those cameras will be released in a couple of months or this summer. A bit long time to wait :)

I'm also considering spending the money on a Core i7 920 with motherboard and cooler. But i don't know.. it depends on what the total sum is for it all. I can't quite decide what to do. :(

Sheesh for that kind of money you can almost get the d80 here in the US. Send me the cash and I will purchase it for you and ship it over! :)

JC: Hehe, a D80 would be nice but.. :)

Joe: Thanks for the link, it's a great site! :)

Bubba: :D i knew you would say that Bubba

Hervé: It looks sweet, but that looks more like a videocamera. Perhaps it has both built into one unit.

I found another interesting pocketcamera i'd like to have, but i'm not sure if it's released yet or not. Hope so..

Maximus, I must admit up front that almost all of my cameras have been Nikons…. so I’m particularly partial to the brand. With that in mind, have you considered the Nikon D40. KenRockwell.com calls it…

“the best possible camera for just about anything, fun or serious....
Sure, I own more expensive cameras, but whenever I grab a camera for my own personal vacations or family photos, it's almost always my remarkable and super lightweight Nikon D40. There isn't anything reasonable I can't do with Nikon's least expensive D40. There is no real reason to pay more for a Nikon D60 or D80. Save your money for more important things, like another lens or flash, or just pocket the difference and enjoy a vacation.”

Something to consider….

I would say the following they have the most DSLR like options, including the ability to shoot RAW and has a hotshoe to mount a flash to.

Canon G10
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3
Leica D-LUX 4

Just a reminder that CHDK exists for most of the Canon P&S: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

This enables RAW shooting, live histograms and anything else you could wish for (minus superior lenses and hotshoe). You can remote control the camera, even join two together and synchronise them for stereo photography etc. You can also get an adapter tube to place filters in front of the lens. The A590 has optical image stabiliser and goes for €99  at amazon.de!! IMO you cannot get better value! It's pretty compact as well so you can take it with everywhere.
