hi,

i am looking for a good recording software (if this is what they are called - to record what you see on your screen - for tutorials and the like).
do you guys have any suggestions?
are there any free ones?
does the hardware need to be very good to get smooth results? (graphic and cpu)

any help appreciated

Camstudio gets the job done. If you do this a lot, it's probably worth it to invest in something more refined, even if only for the UI/shortcuts.

I use the x264 codec in its lossless mode. My Core 2 Duo can handle it just fine and it looks brilliant compared to the classic h.263 codecs like e.g. Xvid.

thanks guys for all your tips!

i went with camtasia studio (the 30 days trial is nice - time to test it properly)

i had some performance problems as i was going to record some quicktime VR with motion.
best setup i could get was with divX codec. (havn´t ried the x264 - it was not in the options ? although i have quicktime pro and aftereffects, so it should be installed - no?)
Adrian, do you use the x264 in losless also with much motion involved ?
would be interesting to know.

thanks again to all of you
