I have purchased 2 models from 3dexchange and both of them have not exported from 3ds max to mxs. any ideas why i would get a "Could not create a Maxwell mesh for object ""." so now im just not sure what to do
any suggestions?

I would check for empty groups, I mean, groups without geometry and delete them. Or maybe just explode all groups if that's possible.

yep that works, well if i explode and delete anything w/o name, which is all the leaves and flower heads! NICE! i guess ill try to rename for a bit.

thanks

Ok, I got it to render straight from max, you'll have to reapply all the materials though; anyway you had to do it as they are from vray, so, just follow this steps:

-Select the main group and lock the selection;
-Open all the groups (if the selection remains locked it will only take 4 or 5 steps);
-Use rename objects tool from tools menu so everything has a name;
-Open material editor, select one material, make it Maxwell's and apply to everything;
-Condense material editor slots to clean the editor (this is optional :) )

The stems of the leaves and some other objects had some strange materials applied that did not appeared in the scene materials; also almost all the objects had no name.

Best thing to do in Max is make it all one polygonal mesh and make the materials into a multi-material. That way it is only one object with one pivot.

Bubbaloo,
so then would material assignments (unwrap?) have to be redone?

Can't help you there, cause I never use Studio. What Bubbaloo suggest could work, but I don't know how Studio deals with multi-materials; UV's should be ok.

Also you could, with all objects selected and groups opened, realign all pivots at the same time with the main group gizmo (for example). Edit: I have tried and still in studio everything was misplaced.

After testing a bit I can say that if you want to export to Studio what Bubbaloo said is the best way. Apply materials to all the parts first, then explode all groups; I took the flowerpot as base object, converted to editable poly and attached all the rest of the objects without changing IDs or materials. In studio you will get all the materials included in your geranium and n problems with instances floating around (as you won't have instances).
