jespi wrote:Thanks Tom, but to me there is no alternative to adobe products, I mean, I need to work with pixels, vectors and layout and the workflow between photoshop-illustrator-indesign is pretty neat.
PS is something I tied with, too. GIMP etc can't be alternatives yet as they have poor or no CMYK support. Although when it comes to vectors and layout, I find CorelDraw's comfort in no application. Illustrator, Indegisn, Quark, FH etc. are 2nd for me. I have big hopes for Pixel as a replacement to PS. >> http://www.kanzelsberger.com Download its demo and see how blazingly faster applications are possible in a few megabytes. Gigabytes of CS4 is truly funny. CS4 also has more than 15000 asset files in the installer. That's a hilarious software engineering.
Tom, do you currently own a license of Pixel Image? It looks promising! I've used Gimp for a while now and currently been looking at PS prices and they are out my budget! Pixel image's price is really good :)

Once in the past, Corel has released a Mac version. I think it was v8 or 9 but discontinued due to poor sales. I didn't already expect Mac users welcome Corel. :P And, I don't think they'll consider a Mac version, at least in near future. But, Corel is seriously powerful. Especially, I can't do without its color separation preview and superior imposition tool. Color management and effects rendering is also priceless. It can even simulate overprints in color in realtime. I just can't think of something it's not possible with Corel as I made a lot of offset print work for years.

I was about to purchase a license but the beta-test stage failed. I couldn't receive feedback for a long time and then suddenly I heard Pavel now found a company for releasing the first version. As it still has numerous problems, I decide to wait until something really working for me. That day, I'll trash PS.

Yes, Pavel says he'll support them.

I have made a test for comparing Pixel vs PS in terms of speed and PS is super creepy, not even close or in half speed. It's very easy to test this. Open a large resolution image and pick a huge soft brush with smear tool. PS (any version) stops responding promptly while Pixel can actually do the job in realtime., silk smooth and robust. I'll try to post a video, here. I doubt PS could be able to catch that speed even with that 2 thousand USD nVidia cover.

That's good to hear. Because slow brushes were one of reasons i didn't go for Pixel. It used to be very slow with large brushes and brush effects (which also weren't real time).

hmm ... not really the fairest comparison since you only compared one tool. how are the other tools? (eg. filters, normal brushes, ...)

You don't expect me to make build videos for all, no?
Well yes, I find all of them faster. You should see yourself. Although, I'm not trying to say this Pixel beta is comparable to PS in terms of feature amount but it's still very useful for daily work.

Besides let's make another comparison:
Pixel Installer ------ 30 MB (5 files)
PSCS3 Installer --- 525 MB (246 files)
PSCS4 Installer -- 1.57 GB (15161 files)

 That is impressive. Tom, would you mind sharing the test image?, I would like to compare photoshop versus pixelmator here on my mac. Or maybe if you say me what the resolution of your image is, I could test with one of mine.

no, the confirmation that all of these tools are faster is sufficient :)
i'm also more and more shocked how big photoshop is getting ...

i'll look into pixel. the program looks promising! but it hasn't been updated since 2007??? or is this just the beta?

Just did a quick test:
Seems that Corel Paints smear brush is just as fast as Pixels... (used a 3600/2600px image).
