I've been following it in the background. From the reviewers so far it looks like a face-lift of Vista. They changed around the GUI somewhat, and included the drivers that were "missing" when Vista first came out (one of the reasons that people hate Vista so much).

It's said that the OS is slower than Vista but seems to have more "pop"; most likely taking more advantage of the GPU is almost al systems today. They've done things like get rid of the "gadget bar" and made it so the gadgets can sit on the desktop.

It's still unclear if they are going to have the same business model as to having many versions (Home, Work, Ultimate, etc.).

The OS is going on 25 years old. With the advent of 64 bit systems becoming the norm MS is rapidly approaching a point where "Windows" just can't cut it anymore. It's been rumored that this will be the last "Windows" and we'll see a new OS (soon?).

I wish that the Linux stuff was further along. I know a lot of people are using it and having good results but when I tried various versions of it they all seemed to be lacking one thing or another. In the "early days" of DOS (when I was younger and still had hair to pull out) I didn't mind messing with command line to get things working (ah, the days of config.sys and autoexec.bat). However given where we are with systems today I really can't pour through forums looking for that elusive "switch" that'll make my wireless card work.

Why the hell don't they just stick with XP?

Maybe because it works?

The Linux Standard Base devs needs to get their act together, there's so much potential there.

I had high hopes for Windows 7 but ever since details popped up, i'm certain i'll stick to XP kthx. They have such a giant number of employees, i can't believe they don't plan for the future and start with a clean foundation. It's not like old knowledge is lost and they have to reinvent the wheel.

A new Windows with solid, modern architecture... i'd pay quite a lot for that.
