Thats an awesome score. The i7920 is $300.00 which is what I paid for my q9450 a few months back. The only extra cost if you are building your own pc from purhcased components is the extra cost of the new motherboards that accomodate the nehalem socket. Also the DDR3 ram that is needed is about twice as much as DDR2 so you will pay a little extra there. Even with all this though you can still build an i7920 system for a little over $1,000 and overclock it. Now you have a machine that performs at the level of the older dual quads. I cant wait to see how the dual processors perform when they come out. The technology is finally catching up with what maxwell needs.

I'll be getting a dual socket Mac Pro i7 when they come out. And check it - they used my Maxwell scene for a benchmark test of the i7:

I think I'll be writing a review of the 8-core i7 for Ars Technica when it comes out so if you're a Mac Maxwell user, keep your eyes peeled.

ya, I spoke to the editor and he said that he tried multiple times but couldn't get consistent results with that scene for some reason.

it looks like it has 6gb ram instead of 3gb and a 23" display included...
i don't think that the display will it make render faster - but i don't know
...but for the ram: yes, if you have bigger scenes than youre amount of ram it will slow down the render, cause the system uses the pagefile which is only as fast as your hard drive.
i would definitely not buy less than 6gb ram - better 12gb for the future...
and if you plan to buy 6gb now - i would go for 3x2gb so that you can add 3x2gb later to get 12gb.

...btw. is it possible to overclock dell pc's? or do they have a special bios?

I am thinking of buying a new i7 PC for Christmas: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/produ ... ref=homepg

Would the more expensive one be any faster? or can I be Ebenezer Scrooge and get the cheapest.
The 3.2 GHz i7 has a big advantage over the other speeds since it has a different motherboard and faster bus.

You can see results now, easily beats highly overclocked C2Qs. For Maxwell, it's a good buy.

Could be a bit off topic here though I'll give it a shot as HD writes have been mentioned!

I read an article in a mag about speeding PC performance by using a solid state menory (PCI card, SD or flash memory etc) and forcing apps such as Photoshop to write temp files to this memory rather than to the HD so windows only uses the HD.

So the question for the technos here is - Can Maxwell be forced in this way and would it actually speed performance if this is an option?

for the price of a fast slc ssd drive you can get a new mainboard,8 gigs of ram plus a decent cpu.

maxwell wouldn't benefit of an ssd as long as you have enough ram, running the os of it is a good idea though.

three are some new things comming ...PCX-e memory...
check these guys out they are already going crazy because of the speed...
