Hi Robin,

You use Rhino's Weld and Unweld commands for this. Here's a thread that may be helpful.

Cheers,

the diamonds are coloured blue.... material is the default diamond ior.... I ve no backgrounds as far as I am aware. Its physical sky.. no sun..

I ve two emmitters just above the ring, material wise st8 out of the materials data base.. MV 700w amd hmi400w.

I feel I quite close to getting this looking okay just need that final step. Its a real job and yes that is a rather tasty diamond! Image

Hi Robin,

I'm not sure if I've understood your problem. Do you want to have a neutral reflection?, I mean, the diamonds not tinted in blue?. Well, if that is the case, all you need to do is deactivate the physical sky, because physical's sky color is blue and is completely logic that your diamonds are reflecting that blue sky.
Also make sure your target camera is just located near to the diamonds to get a sharp image.

Hope that makes sense to you,

josé

Hello Robin,

say is the diamond a polysurface or already a mesh?

if it is a polysurface it should render with sharp edges, no matter what the mesh settings are... maybe your focus is off a bit?

if it is a mesh (imported?) then use "unweld" with option "0°" to restore every facet into a flat shaded triangle.

cheers,

:p

thanks for the help... the switching all skys and everything and just using the emitters in the scene may be the way forward then! I am just rendering the scene again but its taking a while. I ve got a right bad reflection on the diamond that looks like a hole but the lighting shows more drama then the previous render I think. In earlier experimental renders I ve always used very reflective metal surfaces but I think using a more matt one tends to look far less confusing. Also I think black background tends to make platinum metal look more dramatic.... white or just off white backgrounds have nt been great fo me!

I ll post he resulting render when its cooked.

thanks for now.

Hi Robin- make sure that the diamonds are not intersecting the metal at any point- that will make your diamonds look blue. Also I have started leaving a little space between my diamonds and the metal- before I used to just boolean and then render - diamonds and metal were in contact- that would also give blue diamonds. Leave a bit of space and use the diamond ior and you should be fine. Let us see your progress :) Also I would love to see your lighting setup--- your stones look very clear otherwise- also do you have dispersion checked on the diamond?

The contact thing with the diamonds is really interesting. Reckon this render has more drama as an image... but the first render kinda looks better on the metal shanks. Centre diamond looks more actaul diamond like now though. And did nt check the dispersion box... was wondering if that would mean the render would take forever... maybe I ll try that next render.

I think theres still some way to go though. reckon it needs to have one major softer light then the side lights can be turned down a little.

thanks,

Hi Robin- I haven't noticed a difference with the dispersion tab but I don't think that it adds substantially to the render time- although I haven't done any tests and I have always checked dispersion on.

I have started building the ring and scaling the diamonds down slightly so that there is a bit of air surrounding them- often you can't see the difference in the render but if you shook the ring the diamonds would fall out :).
