Mihai - thanks. I'm using my default studio (with a black floor instead of the normal white one) so at the moment it's only illuminated by big flat planes! I'm going to try a couple of pin-point lights to see what I get...

i had recently a really hard time rendering jewelry. any tips please?

i agree about the sparkle and i'd prefer the first, because it shows the depth of the stone.

zoppo - the materials are all ior (long renders but worth it) but the studio is just a box surrounding the ring with multilight controlling each face of the cube! I think if I add some additional point lights the sparkle will improve.

that's an interesting approach. is it a "full" closed box?
like a cube split in six parts?

zoppo - yeah, it's just a 1m cube surrounding the object with the back and bottom hidden. The faces are all separate objects with the same emitter material applied. Just use MultiLight to tweak...

With regard to the point lights; I've added a halo of eight small light planes around the object and have run another test. The noise on the caustics is very apparent (sl 18), the diamonds get a bit 'crazy' and there's a lot more tweaking you have to do but I think it gives good results. I've also turned on diffraction (a little bit). Hope you like them.

JCAddy, djflod - thanks guys.

Having read some tips on photographing jewellery (most notably this page - http://www.tabletopstudio.com/documents ... graphy.htm) I decided to add a 'dazzler' light. I made my own out of an array of tiny 2D planes. The result a pretty promising...

but watchout, it starts pretty crazy and make sure you don't have the dazzler light too bright!

ImageImage

So I tried this new approach on a couple of different ring and the results are pretty good;

without...and...with

and again;

The Dazzler really does add a lot of colour sparkle to the diamonds.

and finally, I couldn't resist;

although I actually prefer it without the dazzler on this shot!

kami - the dazzler is a kind of light. Check out this link - http://www.tabletopstudio.com/documents ... graphy.htm (about half way down). The blur on the highlights is just using SimuLens Diffraction (standard 6blade aperture mask and eyelash2 obstacle mask) set pretty low (50, I think).

djflod - no problem. It's pretty simple but I'll need to reboot into XP to fire up XSI. Will post screen shot soon.

devista - thanks.
