Inspired by the thread currently running about what makes a great rendered image (http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... hp?t=29768) I thought I'd start a 'sister' thread about great rendered images of the past.

It's intended as a sort of homage to the great work done by scientists, researchers and artists over the years and should include the sort of images you not only think are great but those that first got you into the field of 3D Computer Graphics.

Other than Luxo Jr, which I still think is Pixar's greatest work, I class 'Radiosity Factory' as my favourite historic rendering. I saw it 1988, the same year I saw Luxo (which was actually created in '86), and was blown away by it. The light diffusion is beautiful and I just love the 'fog'. I'd still rate the image if I saw it today.

Well done Cohen et al, you were well ahead of your time - this was done 20 years ago!

As said in the other thread, i couldn´t pick out one favourite, but two of my foremost inspirations were Dmitry Savinoff (Labyrinth, The Tower) and David Michalczyk (Suburbs 2100, Future Bandits).

Anything Neil Blevins did circa 1998 was what got me into 3D

I used to frequent his website and just get pumped by the originality of his images.

It's such a looong time ago since i started with computer graphics and 3d (25+ years) i can barely remember how i got started with it, but as my father used to work with CAD by drafting parts for trucks, houses and airplanes i got a good insight into all this from when i was just a little kid. So.. i'll blame my father for getting me into 3d, he was the only inspirational source and still today at age 74 he's still a source of inspiration for my work.
