Hi

My XP64 system lags so much it can't be used for anything else when rendering, even at low priority. I can barely type text or listen to music at the same time. Why is this ? and what can be done to fix this very annoying problem ?! i tried setting affinity to use only one core but the problem remains. And it's even worse now when i just reinstalled my system compared to before. Even my internet connection times out because the system lags so much. :(

max -

My story - from a non computer expert!

my xp64 system ( 8 core) started to get very jerky and would hang up alot when a few programmes were running. maxwell would bring it to its knees. However - it was all down to a conflict in the .NET versions that various programmes had loaded to allow them to work. I think also my automatic Microsoft update downloaded a update that that real finally screwed it. I scrapped the lot and re-intsalled everything to a clean disk and was very carefull with the .NET updated that were allowed - If i already had Net 2.0 I did not let another programme try and load its own version. I also turned off the Microsoft automatic update.

- and

Its working fine - no jerkyness and maxwell rumbles away in the background and i can use Solidworks without notiving any lag at all.

Perhaps it might be a similar thing? a .NET conflict or file mismatch somewhere

Those are great suggestions Jonathan, thank you very much :) and i have no idea why i never thought of these things until you mentioned them.

Now i uninstalled.NET SP3 and SP2 and also something called MSXML 6.0 Parser and MSXML 4.0 SP2, and i also uninstalled a Windows Presentation Foundation x64 thingy. All that made no difference so far..

Some lagging is probably normal, but you shouldn´t have that much issues unless you´re working with extreme polycounts.

A few tips is to try eliminating/deactivating alla non-essential processes and do some cleaning up in msconfig and autostart. (update services, indexing service, java updater etc etc)
If you have stuff in the autostart folder, delete it.
The same goes for the process bar.
If you´re using anti virus software like Norton, you have a serious hog right there.

What system are you running?

This may well not be what a lot of people want to hear but I've found Vista to be great at assigning threads even under heavy load.

Watching videos or listening to audio while rendering is seamless - No problems. No glitches. Ever.

Don't beleive all the "crap" you hear about Vista...

Amen, brotha!
I was going to say something like " what do you expect from an obsolete O.S.?" but I thought better of it. My Grandpa had an old Ford Pinto that he held onto for years and years. We kept telling him, Grandpa, get a new car, that one is old and worn out! But he insisted that it still "drove like new".

Just because it´s new, it´s not always better, as you can see...

Well, that may also depend a little on the scene here. I´ve rendered heavy scenes, worked with Photoshop, listened to music etc simultaneoulsy on XP64 without issues or lagging. Granted, this was on lower than normal priority but still.

Bottom line, Max´s machine does not behave as it should.

Point taken - Wish I had some better suggestion.

What Max is seeing seems a lot worse than the audio dropouts I had when I used XP64 under load.
