Yeah! Let's brainstorm. We can make a test scene contest... a con-test scene.

Oww that humor, please, somebody stop me.

I mean, yes, I support the idea.

The Simball scene works just fine in most cases, but it is not optimized for displacement. Maybe also it could be improved for SSS?

I agree there have been some pretty lame attempts at directly copying Maxwell's materialball, while others are heavily influenced and inspired by it's design and construction. Because what Thomas did do is to set a whole industrystandard with this relatively simple looking object. That's something i have BIG respect for, it's no easy thing to do. Although i wouldn't get annoyed by them who picked inspiration and copied it, i would instead see that as a sign of success :) great works of art are always copied and chosen as inspirational sources by other artists.

About changing and adapting Maxwell's materialball for SSS and displacement, i don't know.. it could backfire on us if so because changing this now classic materialball design would be a bad idea. You wouldn't wanna change the recipe of your favorite dish would you ? i don't think so.. :)

The SIMball has been really usefull for all materials up until the time that displacement was enabled. Although it works adequately for SSS, it could be improved in that area as well. Maybe it is time for a redesign.
