But when it comes to *originality*, it's very obvious Thomas' scene has been a source of inspiration to many other products in the scene and this IS surely one of them. Because, no matter what change you do and think it's something else, the major characteristic *ball-in-a-jacket* is preserved and it's what makes Thomas' scene unique as an inventor. My point...
I was just going to ask what your point was. You seem to be very terratorial about it. If it is truely in defense of your friend, then I can understand it. :)

Well, we always had the ball, the cube and the cilinder in many programs to test our materials. Thomas made that idea more sophisticated and well thought and, as far as I know, he was the first to do so. After that one came many others,... and it's fine.

The cars we drive now came from the cars pulled by horses. Somebody thought about replacing the horses with an engine and changed the object itself. Also now I wouldn't drive the first car made... I prefer a new one...

Respect for Henry Ford, respect for Thomas An. :P

Well, I understand this seems somehow emotional, but sincerely no. The point is, material test scenes are usually made of single objects like spheres etc. you know... But Thomas' Simball put this in another level. He left the usual sphere as a supporting item and decided to wrap it with another object. Moreover in detail, this sphere usually has a stand and an additional part (the ring) helping to test other aspects of material. Additionally, there's a typical opening showing the sphere beneath. Needless to talk about the camera angle, base and others... All these make this invention quite unique. So, as long as these properties are preserved in another scene I'd say it's an inspiration. Honestly in opposite to everybody else I wouldn't say it's the only best method of representing many kind of materials. I just wonder why don't other people try to create something *else* but just modify this idea. I could understand individuals doing this but the lack of creativity in the market is awful. :)

Thomas' Simball:
Maxwell Render™ was also the first to introduce the concept of a standard material test object – the Standard Illumination of Materials ball - or as we call it the “Maxwell SIM-ball”.

The objective was to provide a common illumination reference point for all Maxwell Render users when presenting their materials. The Maxwell SIMball allows users to produce materials and apply them to a standard object to check quality and compare with other materials..

That's true. Except the one from mr repository posted here the others offer the same or less functionality than Thomas'.

Sub Surface Bar!? Everytime I see it in another scene my eyes read it as "Sub-Standards Bar"
I don't know the others but I fully trust the creativity level of Maxwell community.
So, what do you guys think about starting up a thread working on new possibilities?
May one of you compete with or outperform the Simball scene? :)
Well, joke aside it'd be really nice to show how to create without copying...
