Guys,

What do you recommend as the most cost-effective (in the +/-$1000 side) setup?
I would like to get a new quad-core machine with plenty of ram... what are my option? :D

I just bought a new computer from Dell for 8600 RMB ($1200). For the moment i' m very happy with this machine. I choose Dell because HP are way too expensive here in China and the cost/effective of Dell was very attractive. I know most of you hate Dell and i' m not really sure about the product quality but for small investment i think it's fair enough. And i don't wanted to buy part by part and spend time to put all together and face some problem...so it' s was a lazy and reasonable choice.

Q6600, 4Go Ram, 22" display (so so), 500 Go HD ... 3 year warranty and the worst part Vista Home Premium (no choice), but actually it's not that bad..except the look, i can't see any difference than with XP.
