To post an link to a file so it can be accessed by other on this site, is it the same as posting images? Or is it a different process?

The file is on a drive from my personal computer. I want to post an mxs file. So, I am not sure what to copy and paste.

You have to upload it to a file hosting website like http://divshare.com/.
