I'd like to share one experiment i made today, it's a slow Sunday so i'm not having much to do. :)

It started out with FilterForge where i tried to create a good looking map for relatively long scratches often found on aluminium, and then i thought.. "hmm, why not render this map huge, like 8192 pixels". And sure thing, i did and then pieced together this aluminium type material for Maxwell with it. Although i'm not so sure this looks like aluminium but.. who cares. :D

Click the thumbnail below to view the materialball in fullres.

Download the material and texture all in one .rar archive here.. (42.48mb)

hi Max, the material looks very nice, but I wonder if it's really neccesary to use maps this huge?

I mean, for a brushed metal it is not easy to spot obvious repeating patterns anyway, and if the material is going to cover a large surface it usually means that there will be some distanse to the object...?

You're absolutely correct Kurt, it's completly unnecessary and useless to have maps of this high resolution for something like this. I agree with you on that. :)

Which is why i also created a map at 16,384x16,384 pixels and tweaked the material further. However i will probably not upload that one.. unless someone really wants it.

This one uses a 16384x16384 pixel bumpmap, i know it's a insane resolution but i had to try.. click the thumbnail to view it fullres.

Bubba: Yep that's true, now when my system allows some crazy experiments of this calibre then i think it's fun even though it has no practical need nor function for anyone but me, it's still fun. :)

Ah well.. here's the updated version using a 16384x16384 texture. Path remapping might be necessary for both materials, but each and everyone can do that themselves. It's only one texture..

This is the one shown in my previous post above

[Edit] : I'm adding the final updated version below now.

Hi Brett

Thanks :) the material sphere thingy can you find in Studio. I include a screenshot below from Studio which shows how you can find it there.

Max, i' m unable to download the material from China. Actually, i' m interested by the map. I have tried many time at different period to download it but always face some connection problem with your server. Could it be possible to host the map somewhere else even in lower resolution?

hyltom, yes i'm very sorry the material is inaccessible now because my site is gone. It was to expensive to run so i had to shut it down a couple of months ago. :(

But i'll try to find a place to host the highres texture at during the day and as soon as that's resolved i'll be posting a link to it here.

Here you go hyltom, i hope these links works for you in China. If not, let me know as soon as possible.

I uploaded all 3 maps so you can play with them as you wish, they're of pretty high resolution as you'll see.. :)

4096x4096 pixels

8192x8192 pixels

16,384x16,384 pixels

In the material i made for this thread i used the 8192 map. And as these are all seamlessly tileable you can tile them as much as you want.
