I just recently got my hands on two SAMSUNG 22" LCD monitors. Do LCD's need to be calibrated like CRTs do? If so would it have to be a hardware based calibrator or is there a software that would do this.

I ask because these screens seem extremely bright to me. LOL Guess I've been working with some burnt CRTs and couldn't tell the difference before.

Anyways, any help or advise would be appreciated.

Yes, afaik they can be calibrated just like CRTs. And i agree on the brightness, it's quite a shock at first. Most LCDs should be run at high output though, for the most accurate color representation, so you consider getting used to it.

If you have to use it when it's dark, don't forget to add enough soft light around your desk.

I have a Samsung 226CW and it has 97% color gamut (CCFL). It comes with OSD settings and additionally 2 software, MagicTune Premium and Natural Color Pro. You can install them from the bundled CD. I'd suggest you turning off RTA for better color accuracy. Without RTA, refresh speed will fall from 2ms to 6ms, but it's not extremely remarkable. Also, Brightness 100 and Contrast 60 do good here. You'd like to set Color Innovation option as "Brilliant". Without it you may lose some of the colors and maybe won't notice that.

I'd try to lower the brightness till it's comfortable. (depending on the lighning of the room). Too much brightness is very stressful for your eyes. I let my imac run at approx. 50% of its maximum, even though it looks a bit dull at first, it's much better for your eyes.

LaCie pro LCD's have the calibrator to analyze your environment... pretty cool... but their monitors all havea low response... 16ms... hehe... but they are very expensive...

hmmmm.... go blind or keep them bright.... tough choice

seriously though, it truly is a remarkable difference! I just want to make sure that I'm not tripping myself up color wise. I know that with LCD viewing angle makes a big difference on the 'richness' of the colors on screen but overall all colors seem more vibrant than on the CRTs.

I think I'm just nervous about the hole LWF issues you have with other engines and maxwell's material color adjustment.
