Actually - Herve reminded me of how I used to estimate when I was really new to the biz. I'd spend quite a bit of time trying to figure out how long it would take me. I'd look over the drawings and say, it shouldn't take too long to do this, or that. Then I would get my number and multiply it by 2. I found that it always took me about 1.5x as long as I thought it would when I first started out. The 2x rule worked out really well for me. Sometime I would end up really under estimating and loosing a small amount, and other times I made a bit extra, which made up for it.

Also I always ended up a quote, usually sent by e-mail, by saying "give me some feedback on the amount and I'm sure we can work something out"

That way if it seemed too high for them I could decide if I wanted to drop the price a bit, and maybe cut corners a little bit on the final product.

I always quote an upset limit. Give them a range of hours and set an absolute high limit. As an example I would say it would take between 32 - 40 hrs and say I wouldn't charge any more than 40 but if it took shorted amount of time, I would charge that. It gives the client an idea of a low price, but invariably there are always changes and the higher price is always used.

Cheers Peter.

That was an example I had done he is showing. Read just above the picture . I did make money off of that model selling it on turbosquid, but not enough to sit around and watch porn all day. I would have to sell a couple million more than the two I have sold.

Yeah that's Eric's not mine!

How much do you get for models on Turbosquid? Like CAD models not human models.

Well you decide the price on turbosquid. In order for people to start buying them I had to price them around $15.00-$20.00 I have the models just sitting on my hard drive so I thought why not try to sell them. Its not much money, but its better than nothing if I were to just let them sit. Maybe if I get more out there it will start to go up. I think that is the key put out a whole bunch of models that people might need and make sure they are of good quality at a lower cost than others.

Not posted here for years :-)

But this 1.7 verison pulled me in

Price?

What are you worth?

We would charge 2k for that still min, that is not counting the build costs! that would be another 5k beforehand

10k for an animation

15k for fully interactive version

2.5k per day is the going studio rate

Bedroom monkeys don't come into it when doing professional work

Our turn over is 450 million per year, the 3d is small fry

Make sure not to undersell yourselves, alot of companies have large budgets for their projects and don't scoff at putting a few thousand for a render.

Some of you guys have been talking about being ethical/greedy when it comes to asking for a high price for a render. Well, for many companies they pay for renders because photography is REALLY expensive and you are doing them a favor.

I do alot of liquor bottle renderings for a branding company and if a bottle is going to print I avg about $3,000 for a single 5k render and it generallly takes me 3-5 days. Based on what i've seen in this thread many would think this is really me being greedy charging nearly $1,000/day...

Consider this...

Whenever the company I work for does have to use a photographer for a bottle, his going rate is $15,000/day. $15,000/day!

Companies know they are getting a bargain by having 3d renders instead of photography, so even if it seems alot to you and I, many companies are more than happy to hand over thousands for a render as opposed to tens of thousands.

(also chew on this....for an unnamed hair client, they used a top hair photographer for 2 weeks....final price paid to the photographer: $500,000)

I agree with what AAA said above

well, if I would charge $1,000/day... I'd be fired... hehe..

$200/300/day is what I usually charge... and I don't think I am toooo bad.

Workaround using the "RESOURCES BROWSER"[…]

render engines and Maxwell

I'm talking about arch-viz and architecture as tho[…]
