Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

I posted this in the Benchwell forum, but I am needing a little help here...

My work have finally got around to buying my new machine. It is a dual Quad-core.

My problem is in Task manager and Device manager, only 4 processors are displayed. I have XP Professional 32bit installed, is this right? Glebe says it isn't correct. What I need from somebody is a screen grab of their Task Manager "CPU Usage History" showing all 8 cores showing in XP.

This would be a great help as my IT man doesn't believe me, or any of you, until he has visual confirmation of this.

you should be seeing all 8 cores, even under xp 32. in fact windows should treat them as 8 different cpus, you can check this in comp management and see how many are listed under processors.

what model of xeons are those?

E5420 2.5GHZ.

What do you mean by Comp Management? Do you mean Device Manager?

It shows only 4 in there.

yep sorry, didn't notice you already mentioned it.
it's a long time since the last time I had to do with xp 32, but I think it shouldn't be an os problem. it should see all cores that is.
have you checked the obvious? such as bios settings, opening the case and check there actually are two cpus.. stuff like that.

if for some strange reason, in your bios you find the option
"Core Multiplexing" turned off, enable it.

otherwise i can't think of much.. ( do you see both cpu being registered at bios post ?)

... i used to have the same problem with win 2000 and a dual cpu / hyperthreading (4 virtual cores) xeon machine, it required win 2000 server at that time to run on 4 cores.

maybe you can check with M$ if your WinXP license is for some reason not fit for 8 cores...

I took it upon myself to open up the machine. It turns out dell made a mistake when building this one. Our IT Staff claimed there were two in there when they looked??? Amateurs!

I think this clearly proves I was right. There are a couple of red faces in our head office :D ...

I should be getting a replacement very soon.

:D what I still don't get is what your it bloke was expecting from a screen grab. I mean, 4 plus 4 equals 8 doesn't it? why couldn't he believe there should have been 8 threads in the task manager?

I would have checked earlier, but we are generally not allowed to open these up. I got frustrated and went ahead. I was told that there were definitely 2 in there, you have got to have a little faith in the IT Overlords. That faith is a little strained now.

One IT is blaming the other for the unfortunate incident. I am personally loving it. You have never met such "Know it all" types in your life.
