by the way...

would you recommend to put a 50% grey chart in the area of the tripod base for perfect white balance adjustment for post work ?

I use a grey card when shooting interiors - generally just shoot an extra set of brackets. Normally I fade the correction a bit so not to lose the character of the light

Not sure how white balance works on he D40 but using a D200 I either measure or choose the direct daylight/overcast settings from the menu.

I just started playing with my new 450D and Sigma 4.5mm Fisheye.
I downloaded the demo of AutopanoPro. AutopanoPro can output HDR, so do you need to first stitch all separate exposures before making the hdr? Could you just load all those images and let Autopano do both the stitching and hdr at once?

is that some sort of filter that will affect all images (and all brackets) the same or do the values of that (eg. overcast) setting change with the brightness of the field ?

that should work. but since i have no properly bracketted shots yet, i could not produce a proper one yet.

maybe also check out their forum ( http://www.autopano.net/forum/ ).

is it normal that the +-EV adjustment is disabled in manual mode ? this sucks !

of course, the brackets can be taken with the shutter adjustments, but it'd be great also to have that ability with direct EVs...

or is this just another drawback with the d40x ... ?

There is only the shutter or fstop to control the light level no matter which camera you use. The EV adjustment is simply a metering override - it doesn't apply in manual mode and that's why you can't get it to work - it'll be the same on any camera. It will still affect your metering mind you, it just won't affect your exposures.

by the way...

i recommend AT LEAST as a 30-day demo download:
http://www.adobe.com/de/products/photoshoplightroom/

got the hint by a teacher of mine today.

* * *

EDIT:

what i also learned today is that any type of RAW file saves the white balance not directly in the image but as a separate info... this leaves the original data alone. just the type (sunlight, overcast, ...) is stored which can be altered later, for example in lightroom ... yikes !

oh man, this is crap.

25 shots, and one (of course !) has a wrong exposure time. 15 instead of 20 seconds... great ! an other two hours wasted ...

i have to turn that wheel exactly six times clicks to get go to for a factor 4 in shutter speed ... missed one click !

me wants a single button... !! :(

yeah, mine does not have that feature, which is a reason to think about even getting an other camera someday...

The exposure can be corrected without damaging your hdr too much. Open the bad image & a similar good one in photoshop & match colour. Sometimes it's better to adjust manually or use photoshop's exposure correction. Then stitch/merge to hdr. In any case the shot should be recoverable.

okay...

as far as my test have gone, i don't really get good results in direct stitching to .hdr with autopano pro.

the results are far better just stitching just each exposure by grouping in the editor panel and export as .jpgs
grouping is helpful (editor window)!:
http://www.autopano.net/wiki/action/vie ... d_panorama

since multiple files will be written out automatically be sure to use the %l extension to give each file the group's name (normally the shutter speed)

be VERY sure to turn off any color correction in the settings, because the whole panos will become pixely/dotty and go funky in color range. also brightness is kept as in the original brackets.

merge to .hdr then: use ps3 or other software.

So far so good for me with autopano - wish I had found it before buying PTGui - it's WAY easier and seems to work as well or better.

I haven't tried with too many shots yet but I didn't have a problem stitching hdr files - is that what you meant, or are you having problems merging to hdr and stitching at the same time? That I haven't tried yet, but it was a hassle with PTgui too so I am used to pre-merging to .hdr and then assembling those into panoramas.
