ioiooi: You cannot compare your untouched Maxwell renderings with productcatalog 'photos' of rings and gemstones because those photos are ALWAYS heavily Photoshopped, they're never straight outta the photographers cameras. Actually they hardly resemble the original photo because so much is fixed in post you have no idea..

If you're gonna compare then go to a jewelrystore and look closely at what the real gems look like there, how they interact with light and the enviroment around them. Never trust what you see in catalogs and on websites because it's all postfixed a lot.

I'm still not that satisfied with my techniques with rendering diamonds tho. If you look at real photographic shots, the refractions inside the diamond is very different. Its way more contrasty and simplified than renderings. I have yet to find a good environment to simulate such refractions.

I wouldn't assume that the photos of the tiffany ring are unprocessed. The contrasty-ness you're seeing was probably photoshop. Why would they do that? To make the diamond look more diamond-y!
