Here's a recent counter chair project...not the most scintillating piece of furniture...main focus matching texture scales (leather) and working with displacement (footrest) Leather material from jcaddy-thanks for posting!

Those close-ups are very nice!
I'd like to see some variation of the flatness of the cushion surface. It looks hard. Although, that may be how it really looks... Anyway, great renderings!!

Thanks Bubbaloo and Tom!

Yeah...the cushion looks hard, it's brand new and made of a superfoam  ...tried tweaking points on the mesh, very time consuming. I'm looking at bringing the Rhino model into modo and/or re-thinking how I make the cushions in Rhino.

nice details, jvanmetre!

.. the UDT _cage / _cageedit tools in rhino can be a great help if you want to deform a polysurface, leaving it's structure intact!

polynurb-

Thanks for the kind words and for pointing me to the cage edit tool -- will give it a go.

Great stuff jvm! the chair closeups looks sweet :) but can you maybe add a tiny bump and/or long scratches to your metalframes. They appear somewhat flat'ish now..

Max-

Metal does look very clean...agree, scratches would help, will add them.

Very nice. I would suggest breaking up the shape of the piping slightly too - it's a bit perfect / straight / even. Otherwise very good work.

nice improvements in the model/mats. I think your lighting might have been a bit better before though - notice how it's getting a bit flatter now, so you are not getting as much shape/dimension in the chair?

Just a personal take, nice job overall.

Thanks...re: lighting -- I still don't think I've got the lighting correct. I've got an hdr in the environment and about 5 emitters around he object and I'm contstantly tweaking -- not particularly satisfied though.

I would just suggest trying to get a bit of difference in value between the front/top/sides etc, and maybe even some fall-off of brightness from front to back etc. to help provide a better feel of the dimensions of the chair. Maybe you could try knocking down the side light/lights about 1/2 a stop in brightness and see what that does.

Just a thought in any case.

So, is this a known issue?
