we've seen helmer and some more time ago, daros' renderfarm... sadly no more pic available...

what are the risks of running computers without case...? and right next to each other ?

do the components NEED cooling when they're not in a case ?

is there a noise issue with other components (eg. psu) when passive cpu cooling is used (not overclocked) ?

* * *

*wondering*

In my experience, the GPU can be a great source of noise, because that's where most manufacturers safe money. You can get quality PSUs that are close to inaudible.

If they're overclocked/volted, it's definitely advised, because the mainboard components like busses/controllers can get very hot. They rely on a big CPU fan blowing some air over, or casefans. No airflow is a bad idea with new systems in think.

Last but not least: dust. It's gonna land everywhere, and a mainboard obviously isn't as easy wipe off as your furniture :)

little «OT» - question.

core 2 quad cpus are not MP-capable, right ? just the newer xeons ?

so the
Intel Xeon X3350, Quad Core, 2.66 GHz, 2x6MB, (Yorkfield)
is the cheapest MP-capable quadcore cpu at the moment ?

oops. no.

the x3350 is socket 775, so it's not MP-compatible...

back to the 53xx series (54xx)

hmm...

I've just ordered parts for a dual Harpertown 5420 rig.........1600Euros for 20Ghz with 8Gb and QuadroFX............is it just me or does kit seem to be getting real cheap? :)

Most of what needs to be said have already been said but there are computer cases for a reason, think about it. :) and you increase the risk of shortcircuits on motherboard and other hardware if you leave it in the open like that, and ofcourse ventilation will be a problem, static electricity in combination with dust circulating in the air is another of the problems you have to fight with, and if you live in a place with high air humidity then you could get some problems with that too..

In other words, i would not recommend it unless you're willing to gamble with your components like that.

miizica !

is it allowed to ask for a complete list of components ? post here or via PM ?

sounds really sweet ! and WITH quadroFX ?

i know the whole idea is like gambling... but it's about trying stuff... well... in theory at least.

hmm.
what about a large grounded «bird cage» with wiremesh around it, plus some dust-collecting tissue all around ?

weird ideas, i know... but helmer seems to work somehow too...

Supermicro X7DWA-N, S2 x 771, PCI-E
8GB Supermicro DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHZ)
2x Intel Xeon E5420A Quad Core, Sok 771
Akasa Mirage 62 Black Case
500GB Samsung HD502IJ Spinpoint F1,
650W Akasa AK-P650FF-BKU Quiet ATX1
Nvidia QuadroFX1300 GPU

My dual-dual Opteron is nearly always left with it's case open when rendering..........seems to make a big difference on cpu temp.

have you an idea about the maxwell benchmark ? how low could it be ?

Really good, i played nearly as much for my Core 2 Duo setup. DDR2 Memory cost around 130€/GB then, so that in itself makes a huge difference.

caseless ... in germany it can be a problem if electromagnetic fields cause problems in the neighborhoods TV and radio receiving. I read somewhere, that the money fine can be some thousands euro.

An other problem could be, that the electromagnetic radiation could cause bad effects for the health, if the user work many hours every day in aroom with an open case.

Also the radiation of the PC can be easy detected in far distance and be used for spying.

Machine price - I suppose so, the price of two overclocked Q6600 isn't easy to beat. Each system could run at 3.4GHz low speed air cooling -> 13.6GHz. The price of two systems could be approx. 1200,- € for 27GHz. :)

and you have the benchmark and rendertime as the image showing me ?
I wonder cos I have a DSAN board from Asus and E5420
my bench is 800-830
Cinebench score 18500 -19000 points
so the cinembench is ok comparing to other lists - just the maxwell bench dosnt fit togehter

ok thanks for explaining. actually I do copy the T[…]
